One of the greatest joys I get out of directing is unearthing previously undiscovered talent. When casting for our leads via the usual casting calls in Dublin wasn’t giving me the results I wanted, I sent the casting director and their team out to all the local youth boxing clubs they could find and convinced the client to give us an extra day of casting callbacks. The moment Liam and his best friend walked in, I knew we had our boys. From the real black eye to the natural swagger, they brought the authenticity and realism I’d been so desperately looking for. It was a special moment when the casting director for Shane Meadows, one of the most influential directors on my whole career, contacted me to ask for the boys’ details for Shane’s upcoming project.
